Rep. Robert Pittenger

CHARLOTTE – Earlier today, gunmen attacked a bus carrying Coptic Christians south of Cairo, Egypt, killing at least 20 innocent civilians. Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09), who advocates on behalf of persecuted Christians worldwide, issued this statement:

“The heinous attack on Coptic Christians, killing over 20 innocent people on a bus, again reveals the dreadful reality of the ominous threat of Islamic terrorists on all who do not subscribe to this diabolical cult. We must be vigilant and unified to eliminate this enemy.”

As part of a Congressional delegation in February, Congressman Pittenger met with Coptic Orthodox Pope Tawadros II and Rev. Dr. Andrea Zaki Stephanous, President of the Protestant Churches of Egypt. Both leaders expressed appreciation for President Sisi’s unprecedented support of Egypt’s persecuted Christian minority.

Next month, Congressman Pittenger will meet with several Egyptian Parliamentary leaders at the 8th Parliamentary Intelligence-Security Forum in Riga, Latvia, where they will discuss counter-terrorism issues, including efforts to intercept terrorism financing to help prevent future attacks. Nearly 30 nations from Europe, Africa, and Asia will send representatives to the forum, which is organized by Congressman Pittenger.
