RED SPRINGS – Five pitchers combined to strike out 16 batters and pitch a no-hitter for Elizabethtown in a 12-1 victory over Red Springs Saturday in the District 9 Dixie Youth Baseball Majors Tournament.

Coleman Tatum pitched the first 2 scoreless innings striking out 5 and walking one. Ryan Johnson relieved and worked a scoreless third inning with 2 strikeouts and 2 walks.

Destin Montgomery walked the first 2 batters in the fourth and was relieved by Ty Mathis. Mathis struck out the side, but one of his inherited runners scored the lone Red Springs run.

Mathis struck out 6 in his 2 scoreless innings on the hill and walked one. Elijah Bullard struck out the side in the Red Springs sixth to complete the no-hitter.

Garrison Tatum lined a single to centerfield to start the Elizabethtown first inning, and Mathis drilled a 2-run homer over the right-centerfield fence.

Elizabethtown padded the lead to 6-0 with 4 runs in the third inning. Montgomery and Nathan Howell drew walks, and both runners moved up on a wild pitch and raced home when Hunter Elks laced a single to left-centerfield.

Garrison Tatum raked a single to left field, and Mathis slammed a double to left-centerfield that drove in Elks and Tatum.

The game was halted by rain in the middle of the fifth then continued an hour later on an adjoining field.

Mathis muscled a home run over the left-centerfield fence to begin the Elizabethtown sixth. Bullard hammered a double to centerfield. Walker Ward’s infield hit scored Bullard, and Ryan Johnson was hit by a pitch.

Tyler Johnson walloped a 3-run homer over the centerfield that scored Ward and Ryan Johnson. Weston Hatcher was hit by a pitch and scored the final Elizabethtown run.

Mathis slugged 2 home runs and a double and finished 3-4 at the plate. Tyler Johnson hammered the home run and batted 2-3. Garrison Tatum also finished 2-3 at the plate.

Bullard clobbered the double, and Coleman Tatum, Ward and Elks added a single each.

Coach Grant Pait’s Elizabethtown team advance to a winner’s bracket game Monday at 8 p.m. against the winner of Sunday’s Fairmont/West Robeson American game.
