Abbey NorrisEast Bladen senior Abbey Norris has been named as a finalist for the U. S. Army-Pro Football Hall of Fame Award for Excellence.

Norris is one of 20 high-school athlete finalists for the award which highlights the achievements of student-athletes across the country.

Norris is a three-sport athlete. She was named the Four County Conference Volleyball Player of the Year this past season.

Abbey was a starting forward on East Bladen’s 26-1 basketball team ““Abbey was our leader this year,” said East Bladen Coach Patty Evers.  “She was the go-to person for me to get information to the girls. I have coached her in two sports, and she’s never missed a practice in 4 years.”

Norris is also the starting first-baseman and clean-up hitter on East Bladen’s softball team.

The Award for Excellence program, which is open to all sophomore, junior and senior level high school athletes in the United States, focuses on athletic achievement combined with excellence in academics and community engagement.

Academically Norris has the top Grade Point Average in her class and plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the fall.

Each of the twenty finalists for the Award of Excellence will be recognized with a formal ceremony at their schools this spring. For that ceremony a former NFL player who is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame will come to East Bladen to present Norris with a plaque in recognition of her being chosen as a finalist.

Norris and the other finalists will attend the Hall of Fame Enshrinement ceremonies in Canton, OH in August. The finalists will attend the Hall of Fame game between the Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers. The overall winner of the Award of Excellence will be announced that weekend.

Abbey is the daughter of Eddie and Stephanie Norris.

East Bladen’s Melissa Macon was a finalist for the award two years ago.
