WINSTON-SALEM – Bladenboro native Abbey Walters belted 6 hits and scored 5 runs to lead UNC-Pembroke to a double-header sweep over Winston-Salem State Sunday by scores of 6-1 and 11-2.

Walters batted 3-3 in the opener, scored 3 runs and stole 4 bases. In the nightcap the West Bladen grad cracked 3 hits in 5 at-bats, scored 2 runs and stole 2 bases.

The senior righthander pitched a complete-game 3-hitter in the opener to raise her record to 11-8. Walters struck out 7, walked one and allowed only an unearned run.

Walters walked and stole a base in the first inning, but neither team scored until Walters led off the fourth inning with a single, stole a base and scored ahead of Jamie Johnson’s home run.

In the fifth inning, Walters swatted a single to rightfield, stole second and scored on Taylor Gerhart’s single. Walters ripped a single to centerfield in the seventh, stole second base and scored on Gerhart’s home run.

The Bladenboro native patrolled centerfield in the nightcap and smacked a single to centerfield in the fifth inning, stole second and darted home on a Johnson double.

In the sixth inning Walters raked a single through the left side, swiped second base and scored on a Gerhart double. Walters yanked a single to leftfield in the seventh inning.

The Lady Braves, now 22-23 on the season, will host Columbus State Saturday in a double-header that begins at 1 p.m.
