PEMBROKE – Bladenboro native Abbey Walters celebrated her Senior Day Saturday by pitching a one-hit shutout and batting 2-3 to lead UNC-Pembroke to a 4-0 Peach Belt Conference softball victory over Columbus State.
 
Walters took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, but Mia Smith bounced a single up the middle for the only Columbus State hit. Walters only walked one batter and struck out 7 as she raised her pitching record to 12-8 and lowered her Earned Run Average to 1.98.
 
The West Bladen grad ignited a 2-run Lady Brave first inning with a single to leftfield. After a Jamie Johnson single, Jessica Auld lined a double to right-centerfield that scored Walters and Johnson.
 
Walters drilled a double to left-centerfield to in the fifth inning, stole third base and sprinted home when the throw skipped into leftfield to pad the UNC-Pembroke lead to 3-0. The Lady Braves tacked on another run in the sixth.
 
The Lady Braves won the second game of the double-header 6-4 on Rendi Wetherington’s walk-off 3-run home run in the seventh inning.  Walters left the game in the third inning with a leg injury.
 
UNC-Pembroke improved to 24-23 with the victory and will travel to Georgia Southwestern in Americus, GA Monday for a 1 p.m. double-header.
