Abbey-WaltersWest Bladen grad and Southeastern Community College star Abbey Walters has signed a letter-of-intent to play softball next season at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

“I really liked the coaching staff there,” said Walters who also received a scholarship offer from Francis Marion University in Florence, SC. “It is also close to home.” Walters was recruited by the Lady Braves as both a pitcher and an infielder.

For her exploits on the softball diamond this past season at Southeastern, Walters was named the National Junior College Athletic Association Region X Player of the Year. Abbey was also selected to the All-Region First Team Infield and was chosen All-Region First Team Pitcher. She was also named to the Region X All-Academic Team.

Walters slugged 9 home runs and drove in 39 runs in regular season play which placed her fourth among Region X players. The pitcher/shortstop batted .424 which was seventh-best in the region, and she ranked eighth in stolen bases with 15.

As a pitcher Walters recorded an Earned Run Average of 1.56 which was the second-best in Region X. The hard-throwing right hander posted an 8-3 record with 7 complete games and one save while striking out 82 batters in 90 innings.

As a senior at West Bladen Walters led the Lady Knights to a 24-3 record and into the Eastern Class 2-A Semi-Finals.

At the plate Walters batted a sizzling .609 with 14 home runs, 46 runs batted in and 48 runs scored in 27 games. In the circle, Walters was 11-2 with 3 saves, 4 shutouts, 5 complete games, and a 1.94 ERA. She struck out 93 batters in 86.2 innings.

In just her second season at UNC-Pembroke, Coach Brittany Bennett led the Lady Braves to a 26-21 record in 2015 which was the school’s first winning season in softball since 2010.

Walters will start class at UNC-Pembroke in mid-August and is looking forward to the fall softball season.
