Students at the Clarkton School of Discovery were treated to an afternoon of dance and rhythmic music when the African American Dance Ensemble of Durham visited the school on Friday.

The group’s purpose is to educate and entertain people through the sharing traditional African and African American dance and music. The dancers also explained to the students the different instruments they played as well as teaching them certain words such as Agoo! Amee! which means, “Are you listening? Yes, I am!”

The dancers gave a high-energy performance as well as interacting with the students. The students had the opportunity to participate in a dance honoring teachers.

The group’s visit was made possible thanks to a grant from the NC Arts Council, said teacher Jennifer Marlowe. She said events like the African American Dance Ensemble enables students, who otherwise would not have the opportunity, to get to see performances such as this.

The students clapped, laughed and shouted responses to the dancers as they watched and participated in various dances.
