Alan Silvers

January 20, 1925 – October 17, 2016 

Alan Silvers, 91, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2016. He was a beloved, loving, devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Alan was born in Camden, NJ on January 20, 1925 and then moved to Philadelphia at the age of seven. He attended Central High School in Philadelphia. In 1943, he joined the U.S. Army and fought in Okinawa, Japan during the heart of World War Two. He later met his beloved wife Doris, and they were married on October 25, 1947. They had two daughters born in Philadelphia, PA then moved to Raleigh, NC in 1955, and opened their wonderful antique shop, Reese’s. They went on two buying trips in England and Scotland each year and built their own building on Highway 70 in 1969. He was an avid Carolina Tar Heel fan and a great golfer. In fact, he had two holes-in- one at the age of 76.

Alan is survived by his loving, caring wife Doris, two daughters, Jackie Neuwirth of Wilmington, NC and Eileen Leinwand of Elizabethtown, NC and husband Ricky. He is also survived by a sister, Sonja Dudnick of Cherry Hill, NJ and a brother-in- law Edwin A. Schweriner of Dresher, PA and wife Claire. In addition, Alan is survived by four grandchildren, Deborah Kulowiec of Wilmington, NC; Ryan Neuwirth of Ocean Isle Beach, NC; Michael Leinwand and wife Sharon Leinwand of Leland, NC; and Erica Mehler and husband Morgan of Belville, NC. Alan is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Penelope Mehler and Adam Leinwand.

A graveside service will be held at Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery, 450 North State Street at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 20, 2016. A reception will follow at the Silvers home at 1300 Westmoreland Drive in Raleigh. The family would like to thank Right at Home Caregivers, Transitions Hospice Care, and their wonderful caring neighbors. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
