NCDOT open house in Fayetteville will be May 2
FAYETTEVILLE – To lessen congestion and plan for more traffic growth, the N.C. Department of Transportation proposes widening about 5 miles of the All American Freeway inside Fayetteville.
The department invites the public to look at the preliminary design maps and offer comments during an open house from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, at Village Baptist Church at 906 S. McPherson Church Road.
The department would add a lane in each direction between Owen Drive and the future Interstate 295, increasing the freeway’s travel lanes to six. A Fayetteville transportation plan adopted in 2009 recommends the highway be widened.
The proposed widening would mark the most significant improvement to the freeway since it opened in the 1970s to provide improved mobility to Fort Bragg. In the early 2000s, the Cliffdale Road interchange was constructed.
For most of the route, the additional lanes would be built on the inside over the grassy median; they would go on the outside closer to the Raeford Road overpass and Owen Drive.

Congestion is growing on the freeway, which now carries anywhere from 48,000 to 65,000 vehicles on the average day. According to an engineering analysis, as many as 89,000 vehicles a day will be traveling on the freeway by 2035.

Comments received by June 2 will be considered as the final design is developed.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025.
