Aim for a Cure ALS Benefit Archery Shoot was held on Saturday, May 6th at Allen Brother’s Hunting Preserve. Event organizer, Alex Daniel, said he was excited to present the first annual fundraiser to help find a cure for the dreaded Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) disease.

ALS also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, displays varying early symptoms such as tripping, dropping things, and slurred speech according to the ALS Association. The patient eventually requires ventilator support as breathing muscles become compromised. The disease typically leads to death within three to five years, although some people endure for 10 years or more according to WebMD.

Alex said he was very pleased with the outcome of the event. There were 34 archery shooters that came out for support of the fundraiser. Local folks participated as well as people from as far away as Jacksonville and Rocky Mount.

Alex commended a few great people from Oklahoma and Texas because they drove over 1100 miles to bring him a range full of targets. Support received for the cause was outstanding according to Alex.

He thanked all the people who helped the fundraiser by cooking, offering supplies, participating and being sponsors. Alex said, “Sandra Robbins was also an organizer, the Steven’s Stompers team were the ones helping in the kitchen, and Kevin Crabtree of NC Wildlife Commission was on hand for the kids zone. I can’t leave these folks out.” The total amount raised will be announced at a later date due to funding still being collected.

T-shirts are available for sale and planning for next year’s ALS Fundraiser is already well underway according to Alex. For more information visit their Facebook page.
