Many shoppers and business owners paused on Wednesday and stepped outside; to pay tribute to the runners participating in America’s Run for the Fallen as they made their way through Bladen County on the way to Fort Bragg along NC 87 Business. Vehicles also pulled off the roadway throughout the county as drivers waved or saluted the flag in their own tribute to the runners.

At certain points along the run, the runners paused and called out the names of fallen soldiers as a tribute to Gold Star families.

As the run passed through Bladen County, the runners carried an American Flag, the Honor and Remember Flag and a Sacrifice flag. The run encompasses 6,100 miles and 19 states. The run is a tribute to the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice during the War on Terror, beginning with the victims of the attack on the USS Cole (DDG-67) in 2000.

The run began in San Diego, California and will end at Arlington National Cemetery. According to the America’s Run for the Fallen website, the run began with the unveiling of the Honor and Remember flag, which represents all branches of the service and all causes of death. The flag was unveiled in Norfolk, Virginia in 2008. Three weeks later, the first run was conducted on June 14, 2008 and the Honor and Remember flag was carried 4,100 miles by runners.
