On Tuesday, July 13, Jami Edwards Burney, a white female, age 34, Pecan Street in Bladenboro, was charged with Illegal Possession and Use of Food Stamps and two counts of Obtaining Property By False Pretenses.

The illegal use of food stamp charges stems from Burney allowing others to use her food stamp EBT card from April 1, 2020, to March 31, 2021, totaling $1,499.01.

The false pretense charges arise from Burney claiming dependants that were not legally hers to claim as far as food and nutrition benefits. The amount obtained falsely was $1,408.00.

A Criminal Summons for Illegal Possession and Use of Food Stamps was issued for Eula Wiggins Burney, a white female, age 66, of Walnut Street in Bladenboro, for the use of an EBT card belonging to Jami Burney in the amount of $403.59.

A Criminal Summons was also issued for Linda Kay Wiggins, a white female, age 62, of Village Street in Bladenboro. For the use of an EBT card belonging to Jami Burney in the amount of $99.24.

The use of someone else’s EBT card without being an authorized user violates law under North Carolina General Statute 108A-53.1(B).

The case was a joint effort by The Bladen County Department of Social Services and the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office. Food Stamp fraud is a major problem in our country. Some reports estimate that over 3 million people receive food stamp assistance in a program that services approximately 40 million Americans.
