The West Bladen NAACP and Bladen County Schools are teaming up for a Back to School event to be held at the Cape Fear Farmer’s Market in Elizabethtown on Saturday, August 27, beginning at 10 a.m.
There will be plenty to see and do, according to West Bladen NAACP President Xavier Daniels. He said there will booths with games for the children, live entertainment including performances from soloists and groups, and of course school supplies will be given to the students in attendance.
Daniels has spent the past several weekends “Stuffing the Bus” at Walmart with various school supplies. Daniels said folks can purchase school supplies and have them placed on the bus to be distributed. On Saturday, August 27, Daniels plans to bring the bus to the Cape Fear Farmer’s Market where all of the school supplies on board will distributed to students in attendance at the event. Daniels said students in all grade levels are encouraged to come out and select their school supplies.
Daniels said the event won’t stop there. He said in addition to school supplies he plans to have a school uniform exchange. Folks can bring their gently used school uniforms beginning at 8 a.m.and drop them off or exchange them for the size they need. Daniels said parents sometimes have extra uniforms where a child has either outgrown them or their child has graduated.
“If you have uniforms you won’t be using, you can bring them (to the farmers market) and there will be volunteers on hand to sort them,” said Daniels.
Daniels said folks are encouraged to come out and enjoy the day. He said the event was inspired as a way for the West Bladen NAACP to become more proactive in the community.
Daniels said volunteers are still needed for the event. Daniel plans a volunteer conference call for Monday, Aug. 22, at 7 p.m. Those wishing to volunteer for the event are asked to call 712-432-6100 and the code for the conference call is 68119428#.
Also, he said anyone who would like to sing, dance, or has a talent they would like to share, or a church group or business that would like to set up during the event, can email the West Bladen NAACP at westbladennaacp@gmail.com.
