Bladen County students and their caregivers had a chance to grab some free school supplies, hair cuts and more this weekend. Local churches, non-profits and businesses all worked together to help Bladen County students start off the new year well supplied.

There were 1500 book bags given away between the two events. Free hair cuts were offered; school supplies, food were also given away.

Saturday there was the Back 2 School Blast with over 1,000 people in attendance. The event was organized by Rev. Brock Meyer with Bladen Charge, Billie Hall with the Town of Elizabethown, Sondra Guyton with Bladen Community College and Rev. Darrell Copeland with Wesley’s Chapel.

Billie Hall has been hosting an uniform exchange for a couple of years. Rev. Meyer spoke with the Barbers at His & Hers in Elizabethtown about a free hair cut day to bring the community together. Rev. Brock said the guys at the shop were all on board with the free hair cut day, then the ideas grew into one big Back 2 School Blast.

Rev. Copeland said they did a bumper crop pick up for school supplies at the church for the big event. Copeland said the event reminded him of the Bible verse in Ephesians 4:32, “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”

“This was an event about service,” Billie Hall said.

Sondra Guyton agreed with Hall saying, “It was about meeting needs.”

The Back 2 School Blast held on Saturday offered free book bags, school supplies, hot dogs, and hair cuts. There was also a uniform swap, free information given away from Bladen Community College, Eastpointe and the Bladen County Health Department.
