ELIZABETHTOWN – Freshman Zach Meares pitched a 7-hit shutout and struck out five batters to lead East Bladen to a 10-0 five-inning victory over South Robeson Tuesday night.

In his first varsity start on the mound, Meares walked one and hit a batter.

The Eagles cracked the scoring column in the third inning. Senior Sincere Smith beat out an infield hit, stole second and third base and scored when the throw to third got away from the fielder.

Freshman Brady Hollingsworth smashed a double into the rightfield corner in the fourth inning. Meares beat out a bunt single, and freshman Freddie Wooten walked. Smith rapped a single through the middle that scored Davis Alsup, the courtesy runner for Hollingsworth, and Meares.

Junior Greyson Heustess hammered a double to right-centerfield that scored Freddie Wooten. Smith raced home on a fielder’s choice. Sophmore Gabe Barber lined a single to left that drove in Heustess and pushed the lead to 6-0.

Junior Dan Tatum drew a walk to begin the Eagle fifth inning. Hollingsworth was hit by a pitch, and Meares, Freddie Wooten and Smith drew walks to force home Tatum and Alsup who was running for Hollingsworth.

Heustess ripped a single to centerfield that plated Meares and Freddie Wooten and ended the game on the ten-run rule.

Smith batted 2-2, scored 2 runs and drove in three. Barber finished 2-3 at the plate with a run batted in. Heustess batted 2-4 with a double, 4 rbi’s and a run scored. Hollingsworth slammed the double, and Meares added a hit.

Alsup, Meares and Freddie Wooten scored 2 runs each, and Tatum scored one.

Coach Russell Priest’s Eagles have won six games in a row and evened their league record at 8-8. East Bladen, now 9-10 overall, will host rival West Bladen Friday night.
