CERRO GORDO – Senior Cody Benton and junior Wesley Ward combined to pitch a no-hitter Friday night as West Columbus defeated West Bladen 9-1 in Three Rivers Conference baseball action.
Benton struck out 9 batters in his 5 innings of work and allowed an unearned run. Ward struck out one in his two hitless innings of relief.
Benton and Knight junior Nolan Bryant were hooked up in a scoreless pitching duel until the Vikings broke loose for 5 runs in the fourth inning. Senior Bennett Ivey’s triple, 2 singles, 2 walks and 2 errors produced the five runs.
West Bladen pushed across a run in the top of the fifth. Senior Shawn Oxendine walked, advanced on two passed balls and raced home on a wild pitch.
The Vikings tacked on 4 runs in the sixth inning on 4 hits and 3 errors.
Bryant pitched 3.1 innings and gave up 3 runs – 2 earned – on 7 hits and 3 walks while striking out three. Junior Colby White got the final two outs in the fourth and allowed 2 unearned runs on a walk and a hit.
Freshman Kaiden Stanley pitched 1.2 innings of relief and allowed 4 unearned runs on 3 hits. Senior Derrick Long came on to get the final out in the sixth and allowed no runs on 2 hits.
Senior Shawn Tyson batted 2-3 with an rbi and a run scored to lead the Viking hitters. Sophmore L. B. Allen amd junior Jagger Haynes were both 2-4 with an rbi and a run scored. Benton also batted 2-4.
West Bladen will host St. Pauls Tuesday night.
