A commemoration for the 237th anniversary of the Battle of Elizabethtown is planned for Sunday, August 26, at 2 p.m. at Tory Hole Park in Elizabethtown.

One of the event’s many organizers, Sunday Allen, said the town asked for assistance in putting together a commemoration. Allen said staff from Moore’s Creek Battleground, including Matthew Woods and Jason Howell, are assisting by providing a living history program, as well as cannon and musket firing demonstrations.

Members of the Battle of Elizabethtown Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) are also assisting with the event, along with volunteers from Harmony Hall Plantation and other volunteers.

The commemoration will include storytelling, a discussion of history and background on the battle itself. Allen said people often see the historic marker in downtown Elizabethtown, and they see the sign at the entrance to Tory Hole Park, but they don’t always understand the significance of the battle.

“This was very much a grassroots event carried out by local folks” said Allen of the battle.

Following the history discussion at the amphitheater, the names of the 79 patriots who fought in the battle will be read aloud followed by a musket volley. Everyone is encouraged to attend the event and learn more about the Battle of Elizabethtown.
