LUMBERTON – Quarterback Chandler Brayboy passed for one touchdown and ran for another Thursday night to lead Purnell Swett to a 22-0 victory over East Bladen in the Battle of the Carolinas football scrimmage at Alton Brooks Stadium.

Brayboy completed 6 of 7 passes for 109 yards, including a 26-yard swing pass for a touchdown that converted a fourth down play on the Rams second possession of the first half.

The burly quarterback banged through a tackle at the goalline on an 8-yard touchdown run for the final Swett touchdown. Tailback Micah Carter ran 13 yards for the first Ram touchdown.

“We had a little hangover from last night (a scrimmage at Wallace-Rose Hill),” said East Bladen Coach Robby Priest. “But they (Purnell Swett) played good.”

The Eagles mounted a 62-yard drive on their second possession of the the second half. Sophmore quarterback Zach Meares tossed a swing pass to senior Eric Chancy who darted past a pair of defenders for a 23-yard gain.

Meares connected with Chancy again for a 9-yard pick-up then found junior Kasey Price in the middle of the field. Price made a defender miss and turned the play into a 15-yard gain.

Another Meares pass to Chancy netted 8 yards and put the Eagles on the Ram 3 yardline. On fourth down a Meares pass was intercepted at the goalline on the final play of the scrimmage.

Meares completed 6 of 10 passes for 48 yards and ran the ball twice for another 12 yards. Chancy caught 3 passes for 40 yards.

About that final drive Coach Priest said, “We have got to get positive yards to get into our offense. It allows us to use our strengths and put pressure on the defense.”

After scrimmages on successive nights, the Eagles will now go back to the practice field to get ready for the season-opener against Clinton on August 24th.
