Dublin – Each spring, Bladen Community College recognizes students with outstanding academic and personal achievements at a special ceremony. However, the COVID-19 virus changed those plans and the annual event was canceled. Honorees were recently mailed a congratulatory letter from the college president, Dr. Amanda Lee along with certificates of achievement.

Each department or program division of the college annually awards an outstanding student for their performance in those respective programs of study. Students who received awards this year are: Dakota Elizabeth Banks – Carpentry, Career and College Promise; Vicki Beck – Developmental Reading and English;  Kasey Brewington – Practical Nursing; Cecil Butler – Early Childhood Education;  Mary Caitlin Campbell – Associate Degree Nursing (Second Year); Nakeisha Laquantae Clark – Adult High School Diploma;  Abigail Cooley – College Transfer, Math & Science, Career and College Promise; Jacqueline Contreras – Cosmetology, Career and College Promise;  Daliyah Carroway – Bladen Early College; Angel Davis – College Transfer, Math & Science;  Jonathan Santana Dominguez – Electrical Systems Technology, College and Career Promise, Jody Dyson – Welding Technology; Megan Daryl Fowler – Cosmetology;  Michael Guyton – College Transfer, Humanities & Social Sciences Jody Hammond – Electrical Systems Technology;  Kenzy A. Hester – Criminal Justice; Tamrela Lowery –  Medical Office Administration; Airean Lowry – Associate Degree Nursing (First Year); Thomas Mundell – General Occupational Technology; Robin McDonald – Office Administration;  Rhett McLean – Industrial Systems Technology; Nicholas Norris – College Transfer, Humanities & Social Sciences, Career and College Promise; Connor Pate – Welding, Career and College Promise; Hilda Potts – Developmental Math; Laura Strickland – Emergency Medical Science; Quentin Turko – Business Administration; and Kenneth Ward, Jr. – High School Equivalency.

Bladen Community College honored 9 students as inductees in the prestigious Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, a nationally recognized organization that acknowledges the academic achievement of college students. To be eligible for membership in Phi Theta Kappa, students must be enrolled in an associate degree program, have completed at least 12 hours of coursework, have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. These students that met the criteria are, Michael Boyce, Cecil Butler, Andrea Butts, Diane Lincoln, Breanna Lugaro, Felecia Lugaro Robin McDonald, Scott Owens, and McLean Pait.

Also, recognized are Sigma Kappa Delta members for outstanding achievement in English for the 2019-2020 academic year. Sigma Kappa Delta is a national English honor society for two-year colleges. Eligibility requirements are that inductees have completed a minimum of one college course in English language or literature; have no grade lower than a B in English, and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in general scholarship. Those students inducted are Joshua Benson, Bailey Bullard, Margaret Dowless, Adia Drew, Sayvi Fuentes-Eleria, Alyssa Farmer, Charles Gooden, Danielle Griffin, Kacy Gunter, Michael Guyton, Joshua Hayes, Caroline Hester, Tehya Locklear, Abigail Madden, Nicholas Norris, Luke Norton, Kristen Pate, Hilda Potts, Jamie Pike, Jacob Priest, Tara Rogers, Breena Smith, Jessica Stewart, Carlie West, Hannah Wheeless, and Karis Williams.

The Student Government Association recognized officers as follows: Erin Groves, President; Megan Fowler, Vice-President; Nasheika Kelly, Secretary, Melanny Prada Zunan, Public Information Officer, and Kailey Smith, Parliamentarian.  Also recognized were Anahi Cruz, Shelly Jones, Sawyer Norris, Kaylee Page, James Patterson, Atzel Salvador, and Jhabari Tatum. SGA Senators as SGA Senators.

Charles Gooden, Shelly Jones, and Natalie Severine were recognized as Bladen Community College Ambassadors.  Students apply and are selected annually to represent the college in various campus and community activities.

Those students who have participated this year in The Minority Male Initiative were recognized.  The Minority Male Initiative is devoted to increasing enrollment and retention of minority male students at Bladen Community College and ensuring those students successfully graduate. Members of the program participate in professional development training in preparation for the world-of-work, completion of community college degree or certifications as well as transferring into four-year colleges and universities. Student participants are Da’quan Baxley, Cecil Butler, Oswaldo Estrada, Akili Grafton, Austin Jacobs, Austin Locklear, Gary Loclear, Jacob Locklear, Kajha McBryde, and Vincent Morris.
