DUBLIN – Bladen Community College honored 224 graduating curriculum students at its commencement event on May 16.

College president William Findt welcomed graduates to the ceremony and Board of Trustees chairman Dennis Troy greeted the assembly. The Baldwin Branch Missionary Baptist Male Chorus provided musical entertainment.

Guest speaker Robin Gary Cummings, M.D., Chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, shared his personal story, describing his family farm roots, his inspiring high school teacher who planted the seed that Cummings should become a doctor, and his remarkable career as a cardiothoracic surgeon. “I had the God-given opportunity to hold 3,000 hearts in my hand.”

He encouraged graduates, stating “You have completed the single most important investment in your future. You will leave here tonight different than the way you came in here tonight.”

Vice President for Student Services Barry Priest awarded ceremony marshal Anthony Kennedy with the North Carolina Community College System Academic Excellence Award. Marshal Kathy LaMaster received the BCC Foundation Merit Scholarship.

With the conferring of degrees, diplomas, and certificates, Dr. Findt declared the candidates as graduates of the college.
