WINDSOR – A sergeant at Bertie Correctional Institution has died following an assault by an inmate about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to a N.C. Department of Public Safety news release.

Sgt. Megan Lee Callahan, 29, died about 6:20 p.m. despite life saving measures conducted by Bertie Correctional Institution medical staff and local first responders, the release said.

Craig Wissink, who is serving a life sentence for a first degree murder conviction in 2004 in Cumberland County, is being investigated in connection with the Callahan’s death.

“I am deeply saddened and send my heartfelt sympathies to Sgt. Callahan’s family,” Public Safety Secretary Erik Hooks said. “We will do all we can to support her family as well as the correctional family. The department will cooperate fully with the law enforcement investigation as well as conduct its own internal investigation.”

Callahan, of Edenton, had been with the department since January 2012. She was promoted to sergeant in February.

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the sergeant’s death.
