As residents go through the process of cleaning up after Hurricane Matthew, scam artists are creating new and clever ways to lure residents into giving them their valuable personal information.

There are folks in the Cape Fear region reporting that someone has approached them and represented themselves as FEMA employees. There is a proper process that must be completed in order to receive aid. If you have not applied for any type of relief, ask for some identification and get as much information about the individual as possible and report it to the proper authorities.

There is a proper process for notifying FEMA of your needs and receiving aid. You can go to www.DisasterAssistance.gov or call 800-621-3362 to learn what aid is available and how to begin the proper process of applying.

Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
