Washington, D.C. – Last night, with the support of Congressman David Rouzer, the House of Representatives passed the Conference Report for S. 1177 – the Every Student Succeeds Act— which reduces the role of the federal government in K-12 education, restores local control, promotes school choice and empowers teachers and parents. The Every Student Succeeds Act also allows states to opt-out of Common Core by prohibiting the federal government from incentivizing, forcing or coercing states into adopting the federal standards.

“Though this bill doesn’t go as far as I would like, it certainly is an improvement over current law,” said Rep. David Rouzer. “I’ve heard from teachers and parents all throughout the district who are frustrated with Common Core and over-burdened by the heavy hand of the federal government in education. The Every Student Succeeds Act gives much more control to the states, and I urge the President to sign it immediately so that North Carolina can begin to opt-out of Common Core. The limitations on the amount of testing as well as the use of test results will be welcome news to teachers and administrators.”

The House education bill, H.R. 5, the Student Success Act and the Senate version, S. 1177, Every Child Achieves Act of 2015 went to a House-Senate Conference to iron out the differences between the House and Senate versions of the bill. The Every Student Succeeds Act that was voted and passed by the House of Representatives last night now heads to the Senate for a final vote. Following the passage of the Conference Report in the Senate, the Every Student Succeeds Act will head to the President’s desk for his consideration.
