Bizzell Pate with Jason Cox of the Carolinas Golf Association in Asheboro

ASHEBORO- Elizabethtown’s Bizzell Pate won the Fourth Flight Tuesday in the Carolina Golf Association’s 22nd North Carolina Junior Boys’ 13-and-Under Championship at Asheboro Municipal Golf Course.

After two rounds of stroke play, the participants were flighted. Bizzell defeated Samanyu Bedi of Charlotte 4 and 2 in the quarterfinals then knocked off Matthew Cline of Laurinburg 4 and 3 in the semi-finals. In the flight championship match, Pate defeated Landon Merrill of Salisbury 3 and 1.

Pate’s big week continued Thursday as he finished third in the Boys 12-13 Division of the Roy Jones Junior Invitational at Kinston Country Club. Bizzell shot rounds of 78 Wednesday and 78 Thursday to claim the third-place finish.

“He got it going on the back nine and played it in even par with a couple of birdies,” said Bizzell’s father, Chip Pate, about Thursday’s round.

Bizzell who is 12 has been playing competitive golf since he was 8-years-old and won a couple of tournaments last year when he was playing in the 11-and-Under Boys Division.

Pate won the 2017 Coastal Plains Junior Championships 11-and-Under Division at the Greenville Country Club. Winning the Coastal Plains Tournament qualified Bizzell for the Tar Heel Youth Golf Association’s 2017 Tournament of Champions that he won at River Ridge Golf Club in Raleigh.

“It’s been tougher for Bizzell this year because moving up in age group puts him playing longer yardage and playing against older boys,” noted Chip Pate.

Bizzell is the son of Chip and Myra Pate of Elizabethtown.
