The Bladen County All-Stars won 2 of their first 3 games in the State-Wide Activities Committee (SWAC) 12U Girls Basketball Sectional Tournament at Midway Elementary School Friday night and Saturday.
The Bladen All-Stars will play the winner of the Duplin County/Wake Forest game Sunday at 12 noon in an elimination game. A win would send the Bladen team into the championship game against Onslow County.
Bladen County 31, Sampson County 16
Bladen County raced to a 21-3 halftime lead en route to a 31-16 victory over the host Sampson County team Friday night.
Maya McDonald and Mariah Smith shared scoring honors for Bladen County with 8 points each. Teammate Trinity Smith tossed in 7 points, and Alexus Mitchell added 5 points. Shy’Asis Ratliff scored a basket, and Ron’Kira Lennon hit a free throw.
Mariah Smith directed the BC offense with 5 assists and had 5 steals and 4 rebounds. Trinity Smith came up with a team-high 6 steals and a rebound. McDonald collected 5 rebounds, 3 steals and one blocked shot.
Mitchell totaled 3 rebounds and 3 steals for the winners, and AnnaGrey Heustess blocked 3 shots and grabbed 3 rebounds and a steal. Paris Chavis pulled down 4 rebounds. Maegan Burney had a rebound and a steal, and Aaniya Jackson had a steal.
Bladen County 43, Carteret County 28
Maya McDonald racked up a double-double of 15 points and 16 rebounds to lead Bladen County to a 43-28 victory over Carteret County Saturday morning. McDonald also had 4 steals and a blocked shot.
Alexus Mitchell threw in 13 points and had 4 rebounds, 4 steals and a blocked shot for the winners. Teammate Trinity Smith filled up the stat sheet with 7 points, 8 rebounds and 6 steals.
AnnaGrey Heustess pulled down 11 rebounds, scored 4 points, blocked 2 shots and had a steal for the BC team. Teammate Mariah Smith snared 8 rebounds and had 3 points and 2 steals.
Aaniya Jackson chipped in with a point and 2 rebounds. Ron’Kira Lennon had a rebound and a steal. Bladen County led 19-12 at halftime.
Onslow County 45, Bladen County 15
Onslow County built a 19-11 first half lead and pulled away in the second half for a 45-15 victory over Bladen County in the winners bracket final Saturday afternoon.
Maya McDonald led the Bladen team with 7 rebounds, 5 points and 2 steals. Teammate Trinity Smith tallied 5 points and 3 rebounds.
Alexus Mitchell finished with 3 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals for BC. Teammate AnnaGrey Heustess corralled 4 rebounds and had 2 points and a steal. Mariah Smith contributed 3 rebounds and a steal before leaving the game with an injury.
