On Friday, Jan. 15, nursing students at Bladen Community College participated in a simulated disaster assessment and rescue training event. Local EMS assisted with the project. Sharron Thomas, director of Allied Health Programs, said, “The interdisciplinary simulation was a wonderful experience for our students.”

In this simulated disaster, a staged accident occurs resulting in multiple injuries. Nursing students are called to the scene where they begin the process of assessing the injured persons, administering emergency assistance, and transporting victims to a “hospital” environment. Training continues as the victims enter the “hospital” area, where activity mimics an emergency room response to the disaster.

Participating victims wear theatrical makeup to simulate serious wounds and life-threatening conditions. Nursing students are observed by the nursing faculty. Later, in a debriefing session, students and faculty evaluate the event and the response.
