Zelda LockhartDUBLIN – Fiction writer, essayist, and poet Zelda Lockhart will present a reading at Bladen Community College on Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 11 a.m. in the Student Resource Center, (building 7). The public is invited to attend.

Lockhart’s fiction book Fifth Born, a Barnes and Noble Discovery selection, is currently a finalist for debut fiction through the Zora Neale Hurston/Richard Wright Foundation.

At BCC, she will be reading from Fifth Born II: The Hundredth Turtle, a provocative story of family violence, estrangement, and love. A finalist award winner from the Lambda Literary Foundation, this book is set in New York and rural Mississippi in the 1970s and 80s.

Lockhart has enjoyed other writing successes including an Honor Fiction Award from the Black Caucus of the American Library Association for her novel, Cold Running Creek. USAToday.com, and the periodicals Chautauqua and Obsidian II frequently feature her poetry and essays.

The author currently serves as Director of LaVenson Press Studios, a publishing company dedicated to inspiring women to self-define through writing and publishing. She is pursuing a Ph.D. in Expressive Art Therapies at Leslie University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and is a Piedmont Laureate in North Carolina.
