DUBLIN – Bladen Community College welcomed middle school students to campus for hands-on activities and learning experiences in November. Department chair for Math and Science Lisa DeVane coordinated the event.
“This is our fourth year of inviting public school students to the Math and Science Day at BCC,” remarked DeVane. “We hope to ignite an academic interest in science and math for students at a younger age.”
Students from Clarkton School of Discovery and Bladenboro Middle School studied DNA structure, function, and extraction, pH, using biomarkers to detect cancer, and using the scientific method to design and build prosthetic hands while on the college campus.
The event not only provides authentic hands-on scientific experiments, it also places a student in an exciting college environment.
“It is important for middle schoolers to be thinking about college as a destination in their lives,” stated DeVane. “Exposure to the college campus can be a motivating and inspiring experience. With our Math and Science Day, students talk with and learn from college instructors. They use college equipment and sit in college laboratories. The experience hopefully will be a game changer and these students will want to be a part of BCC in the near future.”
