BladenCountyAnimalControlMeetingThe Bladen County Animal Control Advisory Board gave a presentation to the Bladen County Board of Commissioners Monday night sighting goals they have met in the past year, more goals they are working to achieve, and partnerships they are grateful for in the community.

The local shelter is now open five (5) days a week from noon until 5 pm for the public to adopt animals. Before the change in hours the shelter was only open three (3) days a week to the public. This adjustment was a goal to create more opportunities for the community to get involved and more chances for adoptions according to the board.

The board reported new grates have been installed in the facility to make the shelter safer for the staff and the animals. According to the report, along with the grates being upgraded, the division has new safety procedures in place with the help of Mike Jackson, Chair of the advisory board.

Education workshop, and other community activities have increased awareness about our local animal control and shelter according to Charlotte Smith, advisory board Secretary. More events are planned in the future to help increase education about caring for animals and animal adoption available at the shelter.

The board reported that 729 vaccines were given at the Bladen County Rabies Clinics this year. According to the board’s report, the goal this year is to have these clinics through out all seasons during the year to increase the numbers of vaccinated animals in Bladen County.

There were less cats and dogs euthanized this past year than the year before. The board members thanked the rescue group “A Shelter Friend” for all their efforts in helping reduce the euthanasia numbers. The board reported that 767 dogs’ lives were saved and 285 cats’ lives were saved by “A Shelter Friend”. The board also reported the rescue group has worked with Elizabethtown Veterinary Hospital to hold monthly Low-cost Spay and Neuter Clinics.

The board reminded everyone the local shelter does have a Facebook page. For more information about the shelter, follow them on Facebook.

The board has a vision for Bladen County Animal Control and Shelter. The report the board shared listed their vision which included having every animal sterilized before they are adopted out of the shelter, for the shelter to be self-sustaining, to reach out to the Disabled Military Veterans, receive more volunteer support, and have a contracted veterinarian offering services at the shelter at least a couple times a week. The board members of the Bladen County Animal Control Advisory Board are: Dr. Sheila Hamby, as the Vet on Record, Mike Jackson, Chair, Sonya Edge, Vice Chair, Charlotte Smith, Secretary, Dr. Erin B.
