The Bladen County Board of Education adopted the 2015-16 final budget resolution on Monday night.
Finance Director Sharon Penny said there is a $600,000 deficit but that will be fulfilled with the use of Title I and Title II funding.
Board member Wilbur Smith asked if she was certain the board would not have a need to go to the county commissioners seeking additional funding at a later date.
“We are confident it is very sound,” said Penny of the budget.
She added there will have to be cuts made going forward for the 2016-17 budget.
Penny told the board that teacher assistant funds can no longer be used to fund other teaching positions. The NC General Assembly has mandated that teacher assistant funds may only be utilized to fund teacher assistants. She told the board that for this budget, the district is funding some teaching positions with Title I and Title II funds and those positions will have to be cut next year.
The board voted 6-3 to approve the budget resolution with board members Tim Benton and Wilbur Smith voting no and Gray Rhoda abstaining.
