On Monday, March 15, 2021, the Bladen County Board of Education met for a special session virtually to discuss In-Person Learning for all grades. All board members of the board were in attendance.

Dr. Jason Atkinson, Bladen County Schools Superintendent, gave an update on the School Reopening Plan from Senate Bill 220, requiring all schools to reopen for in-person learning within 21 days. Atkinson gave an overview to the board of the new law and then made a recommendation.

Dr. Atkinson’s recommendation was for all grades pre-k through 12th grade to reopen with the option of four days of in-person learning for all students. The schedule for Plan A in-person learning will be offered on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, leaving Wednesday for a cleaning day. Plan A continues to offer the virtual-only learning option for students who want to continue to learn at home.

After a discussion about the new Plan, board members Roger Carroll, Board Chair, Glenn McKoy, Board Vice-chair, Tim Benton, Chris Clark, Dennis Edwards, Vinston Rozier, and Alan West voted in favor of the recommendation given by Dr. Atkinson for Plan A.

Board members Gary Rhoda and Cory Singletary voted against the motion.

Parents may contact the Schools by March 19 to change their student’s enrollment. Plan A will go into effect after the Schools’ Spring Break on Monday, April 12, 2021.

Prom and graduation plans were discussed, but prom and graduation plans may change due to the continually changing guidelines.
