Staff report

The Bladen County Board of Education (BOE) held a series of significant meetings and announcements in January, addressing policy reviews, leadership roles, and calendar updates.

During a recent meeting, newly elected and re-elected board members, including Mr. Tim Benton, Mr. Chris Clark, Mr. Aaron Russ, and Mr. Anthony Thomas, officially took their oaths of office. The BOE elected Mr. Mackie Singletary as the new Board Chair, with Mr. Tim Benton serving as Vice Chair. The event also featured Bladenboro Middle School students Emmoni Autry, Yaria Autry, and Mary Scott Walters leading the Pledge of Allegiance, a highlight of the gathering.

Policy Review and Community Participation

The BOE decided to table discussions on the Fall 2024 Custom Policy Updates to give new board members ample time for review. These updates will be reconsidered and voted on at the next meeting. One community member provided input during the citizen participation segment, emphasizing the board’s dedication to engaging with stakeholders.

Important Calendar Reminders

The BOE shared the following updates for the school calendar:

• December 19: Early Release Day.

• December 20 – January 3: Winter Break for students.

• January 2: Optional Teacher Workday.

• January 3: Required Teacher Workday.

• January 6: Classes resume for the second semester.

January marks School Board Appreciation Month, a time to recognize the dedication of board members. The BOE expressed gratitude for their commitment to students, teachers, and families in fostering a brighter future for the next generation.

Weather Impacts on School Operations

Due to anticipated winter weather, Bladen County Schools transitioned to asynchronous remote learning on January 21 and January 22. Students were instructed to complete assignments independently, while staff received work schedule guidance. All school buildings and district offices were closed during this period, and extracurricular activities, including basketball games, were postponed.

Looking Ahead

The BOE remains committed to serving the Bladen County community by prioritizing safety, education, and inclusivity. As the January meeting approaches, significant decisions regarding policy updates and future operations will shape the remainder of the academic year.

For the latest updates, families are encouraged to monitor official BOE communication channels.
