What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day or Juneteenth Independence Day, is a national holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. The name “Juneteenth” is a portmanteau of “June” and “nineteenth,” marking the date of June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger announced the freedom of all enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, effectively ending slavery in the United States. This announcement came more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.
