Here are the current scheduled court dates for several high interest cases in Bladen County. Information came from the North Carolina Judicial Branch website at https://www.nccourts.gov/court-dates. All courtrooms are located inside the Bladen County Courthouse in Elizabethtown.

MICHAEL JASON BULLOCK
Next scheduled court appearance: Feb. 7, Courtroom 2
Charge: Felony-Murder

Bullock was charged December 7 with killing 66-year-old Mitchell Ray Meggs inside a residence in Dublin where both men lived, according to the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office.

MARK TIMOTHY SYKES
Next scheduled court appearance: Feb. 7, Courtroom 2
Charge: Felony-First degree murder

Sykes, of Bladenboro, was charged Oct. 4 in the death of his wife Jennifer Bass Sykes.

Jennifer Sykes died in March 2020.

Mark Sykes was sentenced in June 2008 for shooting his wife in the abdomen during a domestic argument in 2007, according to the Sheriff’s Office. He served 52 months in prison for the shooting.

MACKENZIE NELSON BRISSON
Next scheduled court appearance: Feb 7, Courtroom 2
Charges: 2 counts of Misdemeanor-Injury to personal property, 3 counts of Felony-Assault with deadly weapon on government official and 1 count of Misdemeanor-Injury to real property

It’s been more than four years since Brisson was involved in a six-hour standoff with law enforcement officers after barricading himself inside a home on Paul Brisson Road near Bladen Community College, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Negotiations on a plea agreement fell through in 2019. Also in 2019, a jury trial ended in a mistrial.

ROBBY ERNEST MILLS
Next scheduled court appearance: Feb. 9, Courtroom 1,
Charge: Felony-Assault with deadly weapon inflicting serious injury

Mills, of White Oak, was charged in August with shooting Jeremy Wade Brown following a shooting after an ongoing argument and trespassing incident outside a home on Leighton Lane in White Oak, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

MICHAEL HAL SHAW
Next scheduled court appearance: March 7, Courtroom 2
Charge: Felony-Assault with deadly weapon inflicting serious injury

The former Sherff’s Office deputy was charged in November following an incident in October with a suspect, William Colt Cain. Shaw was on duty at the time of the incident and is alleged to have assaulted Cain with flashlight. Cain also was charged with several violations as a results of the incident.
