Bladen County DAV

The Disabled American Veterans Association of Bladen County is delighted to accept new members, Curtis Ludlum and Richard Long to the growing chapter. All Veterans are warmly invited to attend the Veterans Day celebration to be held on November 11th at the Historical Building in Bladenboro at 2:00PM. Bladen Community College will hold their own celebration to honor all Veterans at 11:00AM on Wednesday, November 11th, at the campus in Dublin. Commander David Brown has been asked to speak at the BCC celebration.

The Bladenboro celebration at 2:00PM will include James Hunsinger, from West Bladen High School, playing taps, Angela King and Cynthia Johnson will sing, and food will be provided from Hardee’s and Subway. Veterans are encouraged to bring their families.

The DAV wishes to express their gratitude to Col. Ballard and West Bladen High School’s ROTC for the celebration they offered on November 5th, and to thank the High School Band for the excellent job they did playing for the Veterans. Commander Brown shared the cards made by West Bladen High School students with those who attended Tuesday night’s meeting.

On Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11, 2015, Walmart in Elizabethtown will be serving cake to all Veterans to honor their service to our country. Golden Corral, Applebee’s, Chili’s and Olive Garden restaurants everywhere will honor Veterans with free meals for Veterans and discounts for family members, as they continue their annual traditions.

On November 17, 2015, National Service Officers from Winston Salem will meet at the DAV/VFW (Disabled American Veterans/Veterans of Foreign Wars) building on Hill Street in Elizabethtown, to discuss claims, legal benefits and housing for veterans in Bladen County. At this meeting a date will be set for the mobile van to visit Bladen County and begin pursuing claims. Our local DAV is urging anyone who needs to file a claim or has questions about an existing claim to attend this meeting.

The Bladen County DAV and VFW will have a float in the Elizabethtown Christmas Parade on November 29th, and also in the Bladenboro Christmas Parade on December 5th. A DAV/VFW Christmas party will be held on December 12th at 6:30PM. The location will be announced at the monthly meeting on December 8th.

Commander David Brown asks that all disabled veterans in the area to come and join in the monthly meetings that are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00PM at the VFW building, located at 109 Hill Street in Elizabethtown.

The DAV is a non-profit 501(c)(4) dedicated to the service of our nation’s injured heroes and to educating the public about the great sacrifices of veterans and their needs in transitioning back to civilian life. In short, they are veterans helping veterans.
