Democratic Party Chairperson, Dr. Larry Hayes, submitted the following press release to the Bladen County Board of Elections today, according to Christopher Williams, Bladen County Board of Elections Director. The press release is in regards to the unexpired term of County Commissioner for District 3.

Dr. Hayes’ released states the following:

Due to the tragic and unexpected passing of County Commissioner Russell Priest on July 30, 2020, his seat on the Bladen County Board of Commissioners representing District 3 is vacant and must be filled. The Bladen County Democratic Party plans to recommend to the Board of Commissioners that Russell Priest’s son, Robbie Priest, be approved by the Commissioners to fill the seat in a temporary capacity, as provided by law through December 7, 2020.

Furthermore, the Bladen County Democratic Party has nominated Matthew J. Dixon to serve as its candidate for the seat in the November 3, 2020, general election. Under normal circumstances, the Party would allow sufficient time for the Priest family to grieve before nominating a candidate for the General Election. However, the ballots for the upcoming election must be printed soon, and as a result, the Party has been requested to act quickly in nominating its candidate.

The Party would like to refrain from further comment at this time, out of respect to the Priest family, who is still grieving Commissioner Priest’s death.
