UnemploymentRALEIGH — Unemployment rates (not seasonally adjusted) increased in 79 of North Carolina’s counties in July, decreased in six counties, and remained unchanged in 15 counties.

Graham and Scotland Counties each had the highest unemployment rate at 11.7 percent while Buncombe County had the lowest at 4.8 percent. All fifteen of the state’s metro areas experienced rate increases. Among the Metro areas, Rocky Mount at 9.1 percent experienced the highest rate and Asheville had the lowest rate at 5.1 percent. The July not seasonally adjusted statewide rate was 6.3 percent.

When compared to the same month last year, not seasonally adjusted unemployment rates decreased in 90 counties, increased in six, and remained unchanged in four. Thirteen metro areas experienced rate decreases over the year while two remained unchanged.

The number of workers employed statewide (not seasonally adjusted) increased in July by 16,628 to 4,501,556, while those unemployed increased 10,863 to 302,103. Since July 2014, the number of workers employed statewide increased 111,111, while those unemployed decreased 14,127.

It is important to note that employment estimates are subject to large seasonal patterns; therefore, it is advisable to focus on over-the-year changes in the not seasonally adjusted estimates.
The next unemployment update is scheduled for Friday, September 18, 2015 when the state unemployment rate for August 2015 will be released.

Bladen County unemployment went to 9 percent for July. Other southeastern county rates were: Brunswick 7.2, Columbus 8.2, Cumberland 8.2, Duplin 6.3, Hoke 8.7, New Hanover 5.8, Onslow 6.4, Pender 6.5, Robeson 9.5 and Sampson 6.5
