Here were some of the stories making news in Bladen County in 1973:

• Robert (Mr. Bob) James Hester Jr., Bladen County political and civic leader for 47 years, passed away. Mr. Bob was head of the Bladen County Democratic party and an advisor to many Bladen County leaders.

• Two Elizabethtown Jaycees were elected to Jaycee state offices. D.M (Mac) Campbell Jr. was named a national director of the East Central Region which consisted of 42 Jaycee chapters. James R. Melvin, Elizabethtown Jaycee President, was elected State Jaycee Vice President.

• The fourth annual Rescue Squad Sunday at WBLA brought in $6,241.95 for the three rescue squads in Bladen County.
