Here were some of the stories making news in Bladen County in 1974:

• 1st Lt. Robert Lewis Jr. was appointed Company Commander of Company B, 1st Battalion, 252D Armor, Bladenboro.

• Magistrate Rufus A. Britt administered the oath of office to new Bladenboro board members. That board, in turn, elected Edgar Evans as mayor. Evans was then sworn in. Commissioners then sworn in were: Robert C. Carter, Julian W. Smith, Chester Davis, Billy Fisher and incumbent Dewey H. Bridger Jr. Bridger was elected mayor pro tem.

• Bladen County Commissioners voted to spend $15,000 to purchase eight voting machines.
