Farm subsidies are government financial benefits paid to a specific industry – in this case, agribusiness. These subsidies help reduce the risk farmers endure from the weather, commodities brokers, and disruptions in demand.

In the years 1995-2020 Bladen County ranked 27th in North Carolina in receiving subsidies in the amount of $73,023,759. Other southeastern counties and their subsidies and their rank: Sampson (4) $180,682,482, Robeson (5) $178,642,811, Duplin (12) $121,280,770, Columbus (16) $96,041,652.

The largest entity receiving subsidies during the period 1995-2020 was Carolina’s Cotton Growers Cooperative $204,069,781.
