Bladen County Public Library and Bladen Community College have partnered to provide helpful and educational opportunities for the community, free of charge. On February 8th, there will be a Financial Aid Workshop (click here), and on February 22nd there will be an Animal Husbandry Class.

Animal husbandry is the science of breeding and caring for farm animals. In a farm-rich community, this is a relevant topic for those with experience and for those who are interested in having farm animals or running an agricultural business in the future. The class is geared toward young adults who are interested in pursuing a career in the agribusiness industry.

The Animal Husbandry Class will take place at Bladen County Public Library from 5-6pm on February 22nd. Lynn Marshburn, Agribusiness Technologies Instructor, will teach the class. Jasmine Peterkin of Bladen County Public Library shared, “The Agribusiness program is one of the newest curriculums Bladen Community College provides and is designed to provide both entrepreneurial and technical skills needed to run a small farm or agricultural business.”

Peterkin added, “Professor Marshburn will be giving a small overview of what she’s done at the college thus far and will be bringing some critters along with her! She will be ending the class with a live demonstration of just one of the techniques used in Animal Husbandry!”

Here is what Bladen Community College has to say about the Agribusiness program now offered at the college:

  • “The Agribusiness Technology curriculum is designed to provide the entrepreneurial and technical skills necessary to manage a profitable, environmentally sound, community based small farm or agricultural business. The objective is the development of a workforce knowledgeable in sustainable agriculture practices.
  • Students will learn the fundamentals of agriculture, focusing on crop production and business. Emphasis is placed on entrepreneurial and field training. Students will also learn the basic principles of our economic system and government policies and programs relating to agriculture.
  • Graduates should qualify for a variety of jobs in agricultural businesses such as equipment, feed, and agricultural supply sales; store management; farm operations; wholesale and retail produce management; nursery operations; and environmental and agricultural education.
  • Agribusiness Technology prepares individuals to manage agricultural businesses and agriculturally related operations within diversified corporations. Potential course work includes instruction in agriculture, agricultural specialization, business management, accounting, finance, marketing, planning, human resources management, and other managerial responsibilities.”

The Animal Husbandry Class is a great opportunity for those who are interested in learning more about the Agribusiness industry and the Agribusiness Technology program offered at BCC. The hands-on experience will provide beneficial knowledge, and the class is also an opportunity to learn more about what the program offers.

Bladen County Public Library is excited to partner with BCC for both the Animal Husbandry and Financial Aid classes, according to Director Sheila Nance. She added, “We are very excited to partner with BCC to bring a fun, free, educational event to our county! We hope everyone will come out for this special presentation.”
