Lake Shore Riding & Cycling ClubA member of the Lake Shore Riders Cycling Club was killed this week after being struck by a car on Tuesday.  The 61 year old, Jeff Cushing of Lumberton, was riding his bicycle and was struck by a vehicle and killed. According to reports no one in the vehicle was injured and a charge of misdemeanor death by vehicle is pending against the driver.

Cushing is pictured on the far left with his Bladen County cyclists club members.  Dawn Maynard of Bladen County said, “Our club is planning a group ride in his memory. He will be missed in our pace line and we know he would want us all to continue safely enjoying the sport of cycling.”  Maynard was friend of Cushing and is a member of the Lake Shore Club.

According to Maynard, Jeff has peddled a lot of miles and rural roads in Bladen County.  He also was a friend, coach, and business partner offering play ground equipment to many in Bladen County.

Cushing was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 2009 at UNC-P and a national champion in the 1,000-yard run.  “He was an amazing athlete that completed the Boston Marathon in an incredible time.”  Maynard recalls.
