TAR HEEL – AnnaGrey Heustess and Maegan Burney combined for 28 points Monday night to lead Clarkton School of Discovery to a 36-11 victory over Tar Heel in the opening round of the Bladen County Middle School Girls Tournament.

Heustess led the Lady Blue Devils with 16 points, while Burney followed with 12 points. Shy’Asia Ratliff added 4 points for the winners.

Burney tossed in a basket and sank 4 of 4 free throws in the opening quarter, and Heustess connected on 5 of 6 free throws as the Lady Blue Devils raced to an 11-0 lead.

Heustess dropped in 3 baskets in the second quarter, and Ratliff added 3 free throws as the Clarkton lead grew to 21-5. Kiera Lewis banked in a 3-point shot, and Harmony Jacobs threw in a basket for Tar Heel.

Burney fired in a trio of baskets in the third period, and Heustess worked the paint for 2 baskets and a free throw as the lead grew to 33-7. Alina Chavez scored a basket for the Lady Panthers.

Len’ya Harrell and Azillyah McDonald pumped in baskets for Tar Heel in the final quarter. ShaNidra Richardson hurled in a basket for Clarkton, and Addie Bown netted a free throw.

Lewis topped the Tar Heel scoring with 3 points.

Coach Chris Callahan’s Lady Blue Devils improved to 5-1 on the season and will play Bladenboro at 4 p.m. Thursday in the girls championship game. Tar Heel is now 1-3 and will travel to Whiteville Central Tuesday Jan. 22nd.
