The major roadways have been brined with salt.

The public school system has planned for remote learning Friday.

High school basketball teams have adjusted their schedules.

And, maybe, just maybe, there’s some milk, bread and eggs at the grocery store.

Now, we wait to see what Mother Nature brings. It’s expected to be more severe than last weekend’s glazing of ice.

The National Weather Service has placed Bladen County under an ice storm warning beginning at midnight Friday and continuing until noon Saturday.

Gov. Roy Cooper signed a state of emergency Wednesday in advance of the second winter storm to move through the state in a week.

“This state of emergency will waive some transportation regulations to allow for quicker storm preparation and response and power restoration,” Cooper said. “North Carolinians should prepare today for this storm and make sure they have any medications, food and emergency equipment they may need over the next few days.”

Significant icing is expected during this weekend’s storm, according to the National Weather Service. Periods of freezing rain will result in total ice accumulations ranging between 0.20 to 0.30 inches, with locally higher amounts possible. The freezing rain may mix with or change to a period of sleet and/or snow prior to ending late Friday Night or early Saturday. A trace to less than one-quarter of an inch sleet and snow accumulation is possible.

The freezing rain is forecast to begin before 3 a.m. Friday as temperatures dip below 30 degrees. The freezing rain is expected to continue Friday with the high temperature around 31. Friday night’s low is expected to be around 22 and bring a combination of freezing rain, sleet and snow overnight.

The forecast ice accumulations will make traveling extremely hazardous if not impossible. Scattered to numerous power outages and tree damage will occur.

Travel is strongly discouraged. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. Prepare for power outages.

Saturday, the forecast calls for partly sunny with a high near 36.
