Bladen County volunteers, care givers, friends and cancer survivors all took to the track at Elizabethtown Middle School on Friday evening to raise funds for the annual Bladen County Relay For Life event.

There were games for children, face painting, live entertainment and delicious food for everyone to enjoy.

Event Co-chairs Angeline Powell and Adrienne Herndon welcomed everyone to the event and introduced the committee for this years event. Powell introduced the cancer survivors and the survivors’ lap began followed by the caregivers’ lap.

The smallest cancer survivor in attendance was Heavenlee Bratcher, 2, who has cancer-free for four months. Her cancer began in her liver before spreading to her kidneys, according to her mother.

A Kids Walk lap saw many children and teens take a lap around the track led by Heavenlee.

The Classic Cruisers Car Club made a lap around the track and presented a check to the Bladen County Relay for Life. Jerry Dove said each year Classic Cruisers Car Club make a lap around the track and support the event with a donation.

The highlight of the event was the lighting of the luminaries which concluded with the reading of the names in honor of and in memory of those who have fought a battle with cancer.

There were also performances by Alyssa Bell, Sherry Melvin, Ministry in Motion and a dance time was enjoyed by many Relayers.

East Bladen Key Club members and other youth helped clean up the track after the long day of Relay for Life.
