Some folks from Bladen County made a very special trip on Thursday to the Samaritan’s Purse in Charlotte to

assist in preparing Operation Christmas Child boxes to be shipped to children in other countries.

Kay Martin said she had been and taken part in the packing and loading of the boxes for shipping several years ago and decided that it was time to go again.

“I posted on my Facebook page that I had dates to go and anyone that was interested could go with us,” said Martin.

Those that traveled to Samaritan’s Purse were Kay and Tom Martin, Deanie Barnhardt, Sandy Norris, Ashley Everette and Amanda Cain. Martin said there were several more folks who originally signed up to go but were unable attend.

Martin said that upon their arrival in Charlotte, the group attended a training session and then set to work.

“We opened boxes just as they had arrived at the center, removed donations, and two of us removed any items not allowed such as chocolate, breakable items, liquids, war toys. The boxes were then taped and separated into ages and sex, then packaged and boxed ready for placing in the container, ready for arrival in the country they were being sent to,” said Martin.

Martin said there are also special tracking labels that people can place on their boxes and they will be sent information about where their boxes will go.

“It was a rewarding opportunity and the perfect way to start the celebration of Christ’s birth. It really made us all aware just how fortunate kids here are and how blessed we were to share love with less fortunate kids in other countries,” said Martin.

Martin said several folks also signed up to work with Samaritans Purse throughout the year on other projects.

She added that when they left at 3:30 p.m. the count of boxes processed for the day were 61,000.

“We had an awesome day,” said Martin.
