The Bladen County Board of Education meeting on Monday, October 24th was heated and has left many citizens feeling flabbergasted. The board presented a two-phase recommendation to close several Bladen County Schools and build two new schools.

The board has been discussing the issues facing our local education system since 2015. The recommendation made at this week’s meeting is as follows:

Phase 1:

Close Plain View Primary and combine it’s students with Dublin Primary School.

Close Booker T. Washington and Clarkton School of Discovery and combined it’s students to the school closest to the students affected.

Close Tar Heel Middle School and combined it with Bladenboro Middle School.

Phase 2:

Build two new middle schools in the county.

Lawrence McDougald, Town of Clarkton board member was at the county’s education meeting and said, “Whatever you do, your devastating a community. Small towns in this country were built around schools and churches.”

He added, “Don’t half fix it and leave schools in East Arcadia and Tar Heel that take more money to bus in our rural county.”

There was no vote at the board meeting and no action was taken. More information will be available as soon as it is provided.
