The new school year is well underway. The Bladen County School Board started the new year off by celebrating excellent service with awards.

The 2019-2020 Bladen County Schools’ Principal of the Year, Mrs. Stephanie Norris was presented her award during her speech at the annual Convocation held at East Bladen High School.

Mrs. Norris is the Principal at Clarkton School of Discovery, a middle school in Clarkton. The staff at CSD said Mrs. Norris models excellence for us all!

At the last Bladen County School’s Board of Education meeting held on Monday September 9, Ms. Lara Bell Johnson was recognized as the Teacher of the Year. Ms. Johnson is a teacher at East Bladen High School in Elizabethtown.

Other items covered at the recent Board of Education meeting are as follows:

Information Items:

Finance Officer Sharon Penny shared the monthly financial summary.

CTE Director Willa Dean Williams shared the spring 2019 CTE Post Assessment results for the district. Student proficiency levels were the highest in Family and Consumer Sciences with 88.5 percent, followed by Business Education with 75.1 percent, and Agricultural Education with 75 percent. East Bladen’s CTE student proficiency was 75.9 percent and West Bladen’s was 69.2 percent.

Consent Agenda:

Fundraisers and overnight field trip requests were approved.

Action Items:

EL and Migrant Services Director Kimbrie Esters requested approval of the Title III Statement of Assurances for the Migrant program. The statement of assurances specifies how school districts use Title III federal funding to provide instructional activities and services to help disadvantaged migrant children meet high standards. The board approved the statement of assurances.

Closed Session Items:

Board approved personnel. New personnel will be announced as the information becomes available.

Meeting adjourned at at 7:00 pm. The next Bladen County School Board meeting will be held the second Monday in August.

Ms. Valerie F. Newton, Public Relations & Information Officer with Bladen County Schools announced today a training session has been scheduled for all non-certified staff which began employment as of July 1, 2005, and has not taken the training class.

LOCATION:    BTW Educational Resource Center, Room A

I would appreciate your support in helping notify all persons who need to attend this class or anyone that wants to help the school out by getting their school bus license. Anyone that needs a School Bus Pocket Card to drive an activity bus will also need to take the class.

Class times are from 9 am to 3 pm.  This is a three-day class and applicants must be in attendance for all three days. The fourth day is reserved for make up class time or testing.
