A man is dead and a person of interest is being sought following a shooting Sunday night at an intersection near Dublin, Bladen County Sheriff James McVicker said.

Darrell Dionte Council, 24, of the 5500 block of Owen Hill Road, was pronounced dead at Bladen County Hospital after he had been shot while the vehicle he was driving was stopped at the intersection of Center Road and Twisted Hickory Road about 8:30 p.m. Sunday, McVicker said. Council’s brother, who McVicker would not identify, was not injured and was able to call for assistance.

McVicker said the investigation found that when Council pulled up to the stop sign at the intersection that two people armed with handguns approached and fired shots into the vehicle. Council attempted to drive away, but lost control of the vehicle after going about 200 yards and the vehicle went into a ditch.

“We are actively investigating this murder,” McVicker said. “My deputies have been working this case since (Sunday) night and have been able to identify a person of interest and are attempting to locate him at this time.”

McVicker said further details would be released when available.
