I-95 Reopens in Cumberland and Robeson Counties
Raleigh – Thanks to Department of Transportation and contractor crews working around the clock over the weekend, I-95 was reopened in both directions in Cumberland and Robeson counties this morning. That covers the interstate between exits 13 (U.S. 74) near Lumberton and 56 (U.S. 301) near Fayetteville. The opening means there are no detours needed for I-95 between Virginia and South Carolina.
Sections of the interstate had been closed since Hurricane Matthew struck more than a week ago, flooding the roadway in some areas, and damaging it in other locations. That damage included at the I-95 bridge over railroad tracks in Lumberton, as well as a roadway washout at mile marker 26, also in Robeson County.
The closures had affected southbound travel in both Cumberland and Robeson counties, while northbound lanes had been closed in Robeson County.
To complete all repairs, right lane closures are still in place at mile markers 26 and 78.
Last Friday night, another section of I-95 South opened at the Harnett-Johnston County line, with traffic now using a single temporary lane built in the median. Repair work on the two regular southbound lanes in that area is continuing through this week.
